Staying Healthy
Today Mrs Grant the public health nurse came and spoke to our school.
She taught us about the importance of keeping ourselves healthy.
The important messages are:
She taught us about the importance of keeping ourselves healthy.
The important messages are:
- Wash your hands before eating, before and after doing things with food, after going to the toilet, if we cough or blow our nose, when we hav been patting our pets.
- Sneeze or cough into our elbows.
- Use tissues to blow our nose and throw them away afterwards.
- Eat a good mix of foods.
- Drink lots of water.
- Keep warm in winter.
Germs can travel very easily!
We had fun seeing how this worked using glitter and spray water bottles.
We watched some cool videos
How to wash our hands properly
Sneeze germs can travel more than a metre.
Rubbing your hands really fast causes friction and kills germs
Germs are everywhere.
We used glitter instead of real germs.
If we shake hands some of the germs go to the next person.
It happens over and over again.
This was the glitter germs on the first person.
This was the gitter germs on the second and third people.

Blocks, centimetres, metres and more
In maths we are exploring measurement.
Can you guess the different tools we used for measuring?
We discovered that it is extremely important to make sure you start from the correct place or everything after that goes a bit crazy.
Everyone in Room One and Ms Daniels would like to thank Room Five and their clever teacher for making the time that our teacher was at a conference such a fun learning time.

Awesome Artists
Friday was an "Art Attack" day across the school. We all had an amazing time and thanks to Mrs Jacobsen's fabulous wealth of knowledge we developed a great skill-set and produced some absolutely amazing finished pieces.

Takeaways - the good, the bad and the ugly!
Takeaways are something we all love to have now and then.
Today we looked at which ones are a healthy choice and which ones aren't so good for us.
Some takeaways have virtually no fat, some a reasonable amount and some lots and lots - we called them the "Good", the "Bad" and the "Ugly"

Lolly Cake - Writing and Maths
Today for maths and writing we made Lolly Cake and it was delicious.
We were learning how to share shapes into equal fractions of 1/3s and 1/4s and to write instructions using lists, numbered steps and powerful verbs.
Here is the recipe we wrote together.

Toast Fractions
We are exploring how fractions work in maths.
We have worked out that knowing what the "whole" is very, very important.
Today the "whole" is a piece of toast. We had to put different toppings on and then describe the fraction of the toast that we had put it on.
Because we are very clever we also began to learn how to write instructions. :-)

Healthy Eating - Breakfast
Today we shared what we had eaten for breakfast on our ClassBook.
It was exciting to see that everyone in Room One had gobbled up good choices in food to start their day. Well done everyone!
Can you tell what the best choices are to eat?

Super Star Peer Tutors
We may only be five or six years old but we are super-duper clever already.
During reading time we are learning how to be good peer tutors. This is cool fun because helping others makes us feel good and it helps our own learning too.

Water Safety
As well as swimming every day in the gorgeous sunshine we have been talking about the importance of staying safe in and around water.
Water safety tips by Room One:
Water safety tips by Room One:
- walk around pools
- always use a ladder or do a safe entry from the side
- find out how deep the water is
- make sure you have a grown up with you all the time
- learn to swim
- wear a swim suit not clothes
- swim between the flags at the beach
- wear a life jacket all the time on a boat or a kayak
Look at how sensibly we are teaching our own Flat Stanleys how to be safe around the school pool.

Perfect Pikelets
When the big kids stayed over after our Rocky Shore trip Room One and Flat Stanley got to whip up a delicious batch of pikelets.
We read the recipe carefully then made sure we had all the ingredients that we needed. Working in two groups we talked amongst ourselves and took turns doing the different jobs like measuring and mixing.
It took a little bit of practise to spoon the mixture into the hot pan without burning our fingers.
Best of all we devoured every single pikelet topped with either honey or jam or just plain. Delicious!!!

Two Hat Thursday
Because we are such a clever bunch of learners today we pushed our brains that little bit harder and used two hats to explore our books.
Black Hat
What was the main problem or challenge in the book?
Green Hat
Describe the way that the problem/challenge was solved in to story.
Create a new way to solve the problem.

Red Hat Tuesday
The 'red hat' is all about feelings.
Our key question when exploring our books today was - "How did the main characters feel?" and "What made you think that?" (evidence).

Monday is "White Hat" day.
As part of our literacy programme this week we are focusing on the the different types of thinking we might need to help us understand the books we read.
Monday's thinkers hat is 'White'.
The white hat is about facts, what information we have and specific things that the book tells us or shows us.
We are working co-operatively in our reading groups to help clarify our thinking. After we were finished we reflected on how our group worked together using the yellow hat (what worked well) and black hat (what problems arose or what we could do better).

Exploring the Rocky Shore
As part of immersing ourselves into our Term One topic of exploring the Rocky Shore all of Kuranui School, Flat Stanley and a very supportive group of parents journeyed across the Kaimais to Mount Maunganui.
Flat Stanley had a brilliant time doing all sorts of exciting things that he had never experienced before:
- hunting for crabs, limpets, rock cod, seaweed, etc
- having a picnic with loads of children and playing on a super cool playground
- swimming at Pilot Bay
- kayaking in single and double kayaks
- building sandcastles and playing different games on the beach
- hiking around the Mt and having seaweed throwing battles
- sharing fish 'n' chips with big kids and small kids
- watching the Queen Elizabeth ship sail out of the harbour
Check out some of our wonderful photos
