A Brilliant Day of Athletics

Today dawned hot and sunny after an incredible thunder storm last night.
Every child in Room One gave 100% commitment and effort to each of their athletics events, showing their parents that they are true pocket sized super stars.

Riding my bike

Here is a beautiful piece of unassisted writing by a very clever young man who once upon a time didn't really like writing. What a long way you've come.

Riding my bike.
Brr brr brr!
My brother helped me drive my bike.
It was at the shed.
I was nervous at first but I got better each day. You have to practise.
It is scary when you first start.
It is fun now.

Special visitors

At the very end of lunch time today a couple of very special visitors popped into school after Group Agricultural Day.
Here are Ms D's daughter Tian and her lamb, Mischief showing off their winnings.

Thank you Room One for being happy to let me (Ms D) have my phone on today so I could keep up to date with how Tian and her lamb were doing. It was so nice that she then got to come and meet some of you too.

Our Amazing Country

Our topic Back to the Future this term lends itself to learning about where we come from and the amazing country that we live in.
On Monday our general knowledge quiz questions were all based on New Zealand. As a class we found many of these very challenging.
We would love it if you took some time to talk about some of the things that make New Zealand so amazing and why people come here (in the past, nowadays and in the future).

Agricultural Day 2013

Out of the 18 children in Room One, 15 of them brought an animal to compete in our Ag Day. Here they are working hard with their calves, lambs and goats. Congratulations for all your hard work and thank you to your mums and dads for supporting you in training your animals.
In addition to agricultural animals we had some children bring pets and create amazing pet projects. Those without animals planted our veggie gardens, made some beautiful art and were able to come out and support the competitors and then enjoy the gala.

Ag Day Training

Today we had some special visitors come to school to give us some advice on how to best prepare for Ag Day.

Mrs Lee and Daniel's lamb were first up:
Special woolly visitor - Daniel's lamb

Use a nice loud voice for Call, Follow, Run.
Make sure you pat your lamb on it's head.
Practise clipping the lead on after the Run.

Hold you lead just above the clip.

Walk with you lamb next to your shoulder.
If your lamb walks slowly, so do you.
Never pull your lamb along.

When you do your Stop count slowly to 3 before you continue walking.

Mr Kennedy and Madison's calf were next:

Our mooing visitor - Madison's beef breed calf

Regular grooming and cleaning are important.
Make sure your calf is relaxed being handled.

Calves do an obstacle course.
Make sure you can lead your calf across poles, mats
and weave in and out of poles.

The Fish of Maui

Room One was very lucky today to have Room Five come and spend the day working with us.
One of the things we did was listen to the Maori legend "The Fish of Maui".  In small groups we had to retell a section of the story by creating a story board panel including crayon and dying a picture.

Working co-operatively in a group can be challenging; we discovered that the most effective groups talked kindly to each other and often and they made sure everyone had very specific jobs to do.

Stream Planting

Yesterday we planted more than 200 plants next to the stream behind the school.
We all worked very hard and got them planted in record time. It was lots of fun and we didn't even get too dirty. We think the plants will feel happy living there as they will get lots of water and sunshine to help them grow.

Inaugural Digi Awards

Tonight was the very first Digi Awards for the Matamata Cluster.
It was an amazing night showcasing the children's ICT talents from across nine schools.
Each school selected their top entries in each category and then invited judges narrowed it down to finalists within each age group and category.

Room One had three children reach this stage of the competition and we would like to congratulate them for their efforts:

Digital Photograph Yr 1-3
- Louise for "Mirror, mirror, moo cow"
- Louise for "Just one more bite"
- Bradley for "Two monkeys on the monkey bars"

Digital Photo Story Yr 1-3
- Fleur for "Magnolia Life Cycle"

We are very proud of all the fantastic digital work that all the children in Room One created. If you have time we would love you to pop in an admire our Wall of Fame.

Cross Country

What amazing runners there are in Room One.
Every single person in Room One ran their absolute hardest and achieved amazing results. I am so proud of each of them and it was wonderful to hear Lee saying what speedsters they all were because she gets to see children from all different schools run.

Thank you to all the children who have chosen their book for our Reading Fair - only four more to go.

We need to give how we want our display boards to look some thought.
Here are some ideas to think about over the weekend:

The beginning of our Pop Art adventure

We started an art project today which will demonstrate some of our maths knowledge once we're finished. To get started we needed portraits of ourselves choosing either a silly or sensible face.

Can you guess which option was more popular?

Fun times with friends

Think about a time you have had fun playing with friends?
Where were you?
When was it?
Who was there?
What did you do?
What made it so fantastic and how did you feel?

Here is a collage of pictures showing children playing together to help get you thinking.
